Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin) 101
This class is intended for non-Chinese background students with little or no previous knowledge of Chinese. Emphasis is placed on developing conversational and reading skills, while some relevant cultural background is also integrated with the language training. The Chinese phonetic system "Pinyin" is introduced at the beginning of the course. A vocabulary of 120 words plus approximately 30 sentence patterns are covered in this 10 week /20 hour course.
Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin) 102
As a continuation of Introduction to Chinese 101, the class aims to further develop students' grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, and conversational and reading skills, while some relevant cultural background is also integrated with the language training. A vocabulary of 150 words and expressions as well as approximately 30 new sentence patterns are introduced in this 10 week /22.5 hour course. Prerequisites: Introduction to Chinese 101 or equivalent.
Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin) 103
Continued focus on the development of students' grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, and conversational and reading skills, while more relevant cultural background is also integrated with the language training. Another 150 words and expressions plus approximately another 30 sentence patterns are introduced in this 10 week /22.5 hour course. Prerequisites: Introduction to Chinese 102 or equivalent.
Introduction to Chinese (Mandarin) 104
Further development of students' grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, and conversational and reading skills. Upon completion of the course, students are able to engage in simple daily conversations and possess sufficient survival proficiency. Another 150 words and expressions plus approximately another 30 sentence patterns are introduced in this 10 week / 22.5 hour course. Prerequisites: Introduction to Chinese 103 or equivalent.
Intermediate Chinese (Mandarin) 201
Designed for students who have grasped a vocabulary of about 600 words and possess survival proficiency. A vocabulary of 200 words as well as some more complex sentence structures are introduced. Emphasis is placed on conversational skills, but written exercises are used to reinforce the oral component. Prerequisites: Introduction to Chinese 104 or equivalent.
Intermediate Chinese (Mandarin) 202
Continued focus on improvement of students' communicative skills in Chinese. Oral and written comprehension will be refined as well as oral expression through the study of grammar and vocabulary employed in different situations. More new vocabulary (approximately another 200 words) as well as some more complex sentence structures are introduced. Prerequisites: Intermediate Chinese 201 or equivalent.
Intermediate Chinese (Mandarin) 203
As a continuation of Intermediate Chinese 202, this course designed to build on the students' knowledge of Chinese by focusing on the development of oral and reading skills through in-depth study of grammar, new vocabulary, as well as classroom discussion and role play. Another 200 words, as well as some more complex sentence structures, are explored. Prerequisites: Intermediate Chinese 202 or equivalent.
Intermediate Chinese (Mandarin) 204
Further improvement of students' knowledge of Chinese by focusing on the development of oral and reading skills through in-depth study of grammar, new vocabulary, as well as classroom discussion and role play. Upon completion of the course, students are able to engage in daily conversations in areas of social and work related topics with relative ease. Another 200 words, as well as some more complex sentence structures, are explored. Prerequisites: Intermediate Chinese 203 or equivalent.
Advanced Chinese (Mandarin) 301 - 304
For students who wish to improve their language skills as well as enrich their knowledge and understanding about China. Learn to enhance your linguistic performance in social situations. Further practice in conversation, composition, and reading in contemporary Chinese materials. The use of complex sentence structures and vocabulary in both written and oral communication is emphasized. Prerequisites: Intermediate Chinese 204 or equivalent.
Breakthrough Chinese (Mandarin) 401 - 404
For students who possess a vocabulary of about 1800 words and basic reading skills as well as working proficiency. Chinese studies are furthered using authentic materials. Prerequisites: Advanced Chinese 304 or equivalent.
Chinese Cinema and Discussion 510
Join us in an exploration of the sights and sounds of contemporary Chinese cinema since 1980. Encompassing the works of Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and others who have not only won international praise but also fundamentally reconstructed Chinese cinema, this course focuses on how contemporary Chinese film reflects an emerging giant's rapid social and economic changes. Students will develop a deeper appreciation for modern Chinese culture both through watching films and through post-film, instructor-led discussions (in different groups according to students' language level) in Chinese. Prerequisites: Introduction to Chinese 102 and up or equivalent.
Basic Conversational Mandarin 001
Are you travelling to China soon? This class will help make your life much easier. You will learn the most useful words, phrases, and sentences in order to deal with money, taxis, hotels, restaurants, bargaining, etc. The romanized Chinese pronunciation system “pinyin” is used for the course in addition to a limited number of Chinese characters, focusing on survival in a foreign country, such as bathroom, entrance, exit, etc. Our qualified and experienced teachers will ensure that you have a productive and enjoyable time with us.
Basic Business Mandarin 001
Specially designed catering to the needs of business people when they visit China, this class will enable students to conduct simple communication tasks in business activities, such as introductions, exchanging business cards, business etiquette during a company visit, activities at a banquet, farewell, etc. After completion of this short course, students will be able to communicate in Mandarin to the extent that is necessary to survive in the most basic business activities.
Elementary Conversational Chinese (Mandarin) 110
This class is designed for students who have already grasped an active vocabulary of at least 300 words and basic sentence structures and who need to improve their conversational skills at elementary level.
Intermediate Conversational Chinese (Mandarin) 210
For students who have already grasped an active vocabulary of at least 500 words and basic sentence structures and who want to further improve their conversational skills at intermediate level.
Elementary Conversational Chinese 001 - 004 (Cantonese)
For students who have little or no previous knowledge in the Chinese language and do not desire or need to learn how to read in Chinese characters. Learn basic conversational skills for travel and pleasure. Gain confidence and competence to engage in simple conversations in daily situations.
Intermediate Conversational Chinese 210 - 240 (Cantonese)
Continued focus on development of oral communicative skills. Gain confidence and competence to engage in more complex conversations in daily situations.
Chinese for Heritage Learners 220
This course is designed for students with prior experience in the Chinese language. In particular, this course is appropriate for those with abilities in listening comprehension and speaking of daily Chinese (Mandarin), but who know little of reading and writing Chinese. While students will be trained in developing their comprehensive competencies in all four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), more emphasis will be given to reading and writing Chinese characters. In addition, the acquisition of standard pronunciation and Chinese cultural awareness will be also stressed. This course is not suitable for Cantonese or other Chinese dialect speakers. Prerequisite: Instructor approval is required to register for this course.
